Returning to the definition of fitness that I have written about in a previous blog, fitness could be defined as a set of attributes or abilities that one possesses that may allow them to complete a task or meet demands of the environment in an efficient or effective manner. In doing so, one might use a set of prescribed standards, more or less.
How do we apply that definition to being spiritually fit?
I apply the definition to being spiritually fit in a way to say that I believe that the human animal as well as other animals are complex creatures with a reason for their existence. I believe that energy flows to, though, and from us in a way that does connect us as beings. As humans we have depth and that being spiritual indicates a level of fluidity to our beliefs. Our beliefs do and should change over time as we are evolving animals to adapt and grow, we gain experience and our lives flow to and from all those around us. If we are not doing those things, one could say that we are not changing but that we are not truly experiencing life!
Spiritual Fitness is being able to have a belief system, being open to it changing over time but also recognizing that others have their belief system which will also change over time. Those changes are what may lead us towards new relationships, friendships, experiences or away from the same. It is also being open to the universe and allowing ourselves to increase our level of consciousness such that we begin to recognize “signs” from our surroundings and the universe itself. For example, when I was approaching the end of my military career, I was in a less than optimal mental space. I knew that I needed someone who could speak in the terms of energy. That was when I adopted my dog, Peanut. I remember that day. Out walked this little white dog, and when I said yes to adopting him, I felt for this moment that the sun became brighter and warmer as an indication to good things to come. By allowing myself to be more open and accepting, I was able to open up and begin to heal my wounds. This small change has continued to develop and change me over the years into a much more appreciative and caring person as well as a willing participate in my life and those around me.
I have continued to work on my own spiritual fitness by adopting meditation as a means of staying calm, observing my surroundings, thinking about life’s constructs, and I always try to say thank you.
